When people unite, all beautiful things are possible

It’s often easy to write a series of promises in an election campaign, but what I learned this year is you can have a plan and then something can happen that shifts all your work. My commitment to you is to work hard in the interests of all students, to continue to build the capacity of our union to serve students, and to make sure our student union is the force it can be.

Experience

There are a lot of important issues coming up for the DSU, including renovations to the Student Union Building, our first year of independent advocacy, and the possibility to make real changes when it comes to challenging misogyny, sexism, racism and other forms of oppression on campus. I know these issues, have lived and breathed these issues, and will be able to continue into next year to drive these issues.

Our student union needs someone who can get to work right away to continue to address important issues. I ran for Vice President (Internal), because I wanted the student union to be our union, and I want to continue that work.

Communication

Even if the student union is moving mountains, it doesn’t matter if DSU members don’t know about it. Students don’t need to know the faces of the executive, they need to know that there is a food bank if they need it; that if they need help, there are services there; that they can access affordable events; and that their student union is advocating to reduce tuition fees, to oppose program and funding cuts, and to fight for safer campuses.

I’m committed to:

  • Dedicated staff for membership outreach and communication on all campuses.
  • Working with societies and campus stakeholders to improve two-way communication between all the elements of our union.
  • Working with the Executive as a team to improve how we update students about ongoing issues and advocacy.

 Accountability

Whether you need some groceries at the food bank or are trying to makes sure your society throws a fun event, you need to know your student union executive, staff and volunteers are working for you.

I am committed to:

  • More regular town halls on issues that matter, like the town halls the DSU organized on Divestment and Misogyny.
  • Ensuring that big projects like the SUB renovations and external review of incidents of misogyny in the school of Dentistry address student needs.
  • Advocating for more open and accountable Board of Governors meetings.
  • Continuing to work with the Sexton Advisory Committee to make sure that Sexton students receive the service they deserve.

I want the union to be your individual union, and all of our united union.

When people unite, all beautiful things are possible!

I believe in strengthening our union by connecting students, societies and services.

Before I was Vice President (Internal)

We have done some incredible work this year, while I have been in the position of VP Internal. But I have been working closely with the DSU since 2011.  In this time I consistently brought students and community members together through events, campaigns and working groups.  These just are some examples from past years of what I have been a part of creating at Dalhousie:

TEDxHalifax: We brought 500 people together to create TEDxHalifax at Dalhousie
The Sandbox: We created a society HUB in the Student Union Building so students could easily access societies and societies could connect with each other and share resources.
The Bigger Pitcher Lecture Series: 60 people came together over beer at the Sexton campus T-Room for a panel and discussion on community transformation.
Nocturne: Over 100 students worked together to create an interactive public art display during Nocturne
Brains for Change: Over 100 students and community members came together to share knowledge and skills to make our community a better place.
Art of Hosting: 75 students and faculty came together for a retreat to discuss how we could collaborate on the issues at our University.
Action Group: The action group creates a weekly meeting time to talk about student issues
Students Unite: We brought students together from across Halifax to take a stand against raised tuition fees
Student Action Day Camp: 100 students from around Halifax came together to share skills and knowledge through workshops and discussions
Take Back the Campus: Over 200 students and community members came together to challenge sexual assault and rape culture on our respective campuses
Alternative Orientation Week Events: Organizing a variety of events during Orientation week so more Dalhousie students can find spaces that they feel comfortable in. For example, the Yurt, a creative art space
